Cover up tattoos are tattoos that are done to cover up an old, and usually, regretful tattoo. There are many reasons why people want to get rid of or cover up an old tattoo. Sometimes the tattoo is just so ugly because of subject matter or an inexperienced tattoo artist that it needs to go. Other reasons are more personal, such as the name of a now ex lover or spouse, or something that represents a different time in your life that you'd like to move past. Location can also be a reason why people want a tattoo removed, but a cover up will not be able to fix this problem.
Cover up tattoos are difficult to get done because there are many factors involved. It depends on how complex and large the old tattoo was. Is it a big tattoo with lots of dark areas? You may have a problem with a successful cover up, however, a very experienced and talented tattoo artist may be able to come up with something. This challenge is what makes shows like "Bad Ink" so popular. Most cover ups are solved by covering the old tattoo with inks that are black or dark. Name tattoos are generally easy to cover up because there are lots of spaces in letters and they are usually not so big. Other small tattoos on areas such as the ankle, wrist, lower back and arm can have very successful cover up tattoos.
The reason why it's important to research, research, research and find the right tattoo artist to fix your problem tattoo is because you do NOT want this coverup job to become an even BIGGER cover up tattoo job later down the line! An inexperienced tattoo artist may be talented at creating tattoos but might have a problem coming up with the perfect solution to a cover up job.
