New York musician Bill Greenberg recently dropped his new single, “Ukraine,” blending tints of folk and world music into a powerful Anti-War song.
Greenberg explains, “‘Ukraine’ envisions a Ukrainian soldier withstanding Putin’s so-called ‘special military operation’ repelling the destruction of their country and their homes—no matter what the cost to themselves or to their families.”
He goes on, “I wanted the song released with a video in the several languages allowing those most affected by the Ukrainian conflict to understand the consequence of the bloodshed.”
Greenberg’s passion for making music began when he was nine years old when his grandmother gifted him a guitar on his birthday. Since then, he has toured Belgium, Ireland, Germany, and the U.S. with Bill’s Band.
Bill Greenberg’s solo material gives a voice to both his musical and philosophical pursuits.
“Ukraine” opens on a poignant acoustic guitar, revealing sensitive tones as Greenberg’s tender, evocative vocals imbue the lyrics with expressive timbres, at once gentle and profound. A braying harmonica adds melancholic, drifting echoes, giving the tune wistful urgency.
“Go tell your children / Go tell them all / Somebody’s standing / Outside your door / Save your sorrows for the moment / Set the table / Take me home / Ragged as we stand / We can’t be sad / Oh no.”
The video, created by Dante Torrieri, depicts images of the devastating destruction of buildings and homes, along with the emotional toll of war. Shattered tanks and vehicles litter the streets as the visuals display the utter ruin of a country.
The combination of the haunting music and stark images of “Ukraine” exposes the cruel intimacy and heartache of a sudden convulsion of historic events.
