Less than a week ago, Texas electronic indie artist 1st Base Runner, the musical project of Tim Husmann, released the music video for “All Thoughts,” the first single from 1st Base Runner’s forthcoming album, Seven Years of Silence,” slated for release on April 8.
The album’s title – Seven Years of Silence – refers to the length of Husmann’s time away from the music industry, proving that for him music is an innate compulsion.
Talking about the compulsion, Husmann shares, “It was something that had to be made. I had tried to suppress the concepts and ideas explored in the 8 tracks for several years. It is my willingness to be vulnerable and laid bare before others in an attempt to glimpse some fundamental truths about what it means to be here and to be present. It is an exploration of expectations and shortcomings and how they in turn will make us all the more uniquely human. No one gets out with clean hands, not on this ride, and not in this lifetime.”
Prior to his hiatus, Husmann performed with top, international acts, appearing at celebrated venues like the Troubadour, the Fillmore, and Montreal’s St. James United Church. Now, after a seven-year break, he’s returned with a brand-new sound merging vintage synths, atmospheric surfaces, and surrealist soundscapes.
“All Thoughts” blends tints of shoegaze, post-punk, gothic-pop, and new wave aromas into a thrumming, shimmering tune reminiscent of Depeche Mode covering the Cure. The throbbing rhythm imbues the tune with contagious, almost mesmerizing momentum.
Gleaming, jangly colors juxtaposed atop the cavernous vibration of the bassline give the harmonics simultaneous dark and luminous glazes, while Husmann’s delicious rasping timbres infuse the lyrics with dreamy, hovering, haunting tones.
“Wake me up girl, ’cause I can’t feel my face and I’m / Trying to be your limbs again / Wake me up god, ’cause I can’t feel my legs and I’m / Falling down again.”
The video, directed by Husmann, seduces viewers with a smorgasbord of trippy, technological images highlighted by a masked figure wearing leg braces sitting atop a piano in front of a mobile home.
“All Thoughts” is superb, pushing out grainy post-punk flavored with sheens of new wave spangles, all capped by the hypnotic voice of 1st Base Runner.
