Dia de Los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday that celebrates life in all of its cycles and planes, by remembering loved ones who have passed. The belief is that the dead can come and be among the living for that day. Family and friends who are separated because of death can be with you again once more. Beautiful and sometimes massive shrine like altars are built and created in loved ones’ honors. Marigolds and roses are flowers used in the celebration. Sugar skulls and face painting to look like skulls make this festival a very lively and positive one. It is a beautiful way to look at death, as it is a certainty for all who live, that we all die. No need to be morbid or sad about it, as it is a part of this amazing journey called life.
